Cisco propels Cloud-Ready Switching Portfolio

Cisco propels Cloud-Ready Switching Portfolio

According to the Cisco Cloud Index, more than 50 per cent of computing workloads in data centers will be cloud-based by 2014, and global cloud traffic will grow more than 12 times by 2015, to 1.6 zettabytes per year.  Based on these trends, Cisco announced it has updated its switching portfolio with 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) and 40 GE capabilities. These new capabilities provide a holistic architectural approach across campus, data center and service provider environments, and give customers a significant advantage while addressing emerging trends like cloud, video, mobility, and the proliferation of 10 GE.

With this announcement, Cisco becomes the extensive provider of 1/10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet and converged networking switching solutions.  Supporting the transition to higher networking speeds, in addition to Cisco’s recently announced Cloud Verse solution, is a key element of Cisco’s strategy to help its customers meet the demands of emerging cloud computing trends and the resulting data deluge.

Cisco is delivering investment protection with 40 GE performance options to its Catalyst 6500 switching line, and 40 GE and 100 GE capabilities in its Nexus7000 portfolio for interconnecting data centers to service providers.  To expand its campus aggregation and data center top of rack switching, Cisco also announced two new fixed-configuration platforms that provide high-density 10 GE switching. Cisco announced simpler network virtualization functionality for its Catalyst 6500, 4500 and Aggregation Services Router (ASR) 1000 product lines with a new technology called Easy Virtual Network, as well as scalable virtual services with a new Nexus1010-X appliance for the data center.  Together, these enhancements will help businesses scale their networks, simplify operations, and protect their existing Cisco switching investments, many of which have been deployed for a decade or longer.

Blue Coat adds Optimization for Encrypted Flash Video

Blue Coat adds Optimization for Encrypted Flash Video

Blue Coat Systems Inc. has announced that it has added the ability to scale and optimize encrypted Adobe Flash video in addition to the video delivery capabilities already integrated with Blue Coat MACH5 WAN Optimization appliances. The MACH5 solution includes a combination of stream-splitting, pre-population and advanced video caching technologies to scale the use of live or on-demand internal company video, as well as external Web video, with minimal network impact. This prevents video from saturating a company’s Wide Area Network (WAN) or Internet gateway, or crippling the performance of other business critical applications while making video available to employees throughout the company.

Steve Daheb, Chief Marketing Officer & Sr. VP, Blue Coat Systems Inc. said, “Most companies want to significantly increase their use of internal video for training and communication but are limited by the capacity constraints of their existing WAN links to branch offices. Blue Coat removes most of the network impact associated with video by fully integrating video optimization with our MACH5 WAN optimization solution to accelerate a full range of business traffic, including Web, cloud and video applications.”

STMicroelectronics breaks through LED Camera Flash Limitations

STMicroelectronics breaks through LED Camera Flash Limitations

STMicroelectronics has added two miniature motor drivers to its range of SLLIMM (Small Low-Loss Intelligent Molded Modules), which will enable domestic appliances to offer better energy ratings.

Intelligent motor controllers provide the key to using less energy, while also enabling additional benefits such as new features and quieter operation in appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioners and fans.

ST’s new SLLIMM nano family extends the portfolio of SLIMM intelligent power modules for appliance motor drivers in a single module that connect directly between the central microcontroller and the motor. Compared to a conventional driver, which typically requires more than 30 individual components, ST’s modular solution reduces costs by simplifying design and significantly reducing component count while saving space, improving reliability and lowering electromagnetic emissions (EMI). The modules are also ideal for small built-in motor applications where assembly space is limited.
